The Melodie collection from Popbasic was released earlier this month and featured the Melodie dress and a pair of the Sugar Plum earrings, all at the low price of USD$56, which of course INCLUDES postage (yes international postage!!). Anyway, I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to get this collection because of the ruffled front. I don’t mind a bit of ruffles but, my initial thoughts were – can I pull this off? Then Madeline released the video featuring Melodie in the Melodie dress. It was only then that I realised…hello! It’s a reversible dress! I mean, two for the price of one people – yes I am such a sucker for versatility and you’d be silly NOT to be sucked in by that.

So yes, I did snap up the Melodie collection, thinking, this would make the perfect dress to wear for Miss 11’s Grade 6 graduation night.
Thankfully it arrived just in time – two days before the big night. But, I was quite taken aback by the colour when I took it out of the box. I had expected a red that’s slightly darker or more on the cooler side (don’t ask me why, I just did), instead I was faced with a something that leaned towards coral. I was a little bit scared because I don’t normally wear coral. Peach yes, coral? I was a bit iffy. Until I put it on. And boy was I glad I did! I was surprised that I could wear this shade – see, it pays to try something you’re not used to.
Because it has a high waist line and is elasticised, in a light, lined polyester fabric, I knew I needed a thick, elasticised waist belt to cinch it in and create a longer waist line. I’ve decided to go for a light summery look by teaming it with the **cream waist belt that came in August’s Trendy **Her Fashion Box subscription. I wore this with the Sugar Plum earrings that came with the Melodie collection, my Monet white beaded necklace that I bought from a vintage market in New York and completed my look with a pair of open-toed nude wedges from Jane Debster and a clutch I bought from Target last year.

The other surprising thing was of course the fact that I DID wear it with the ruffled bit at the front! It wasn’t too much on me and the added “girlyness” of the design wasn’t too over the top for my liking. When worn the other way round, the dress looks slightly more casual and I could bling it up with a chunkier style necklace.
Miss 11 wore the dress I got her from Target when we were out two weeks ago, during our “mother-daughter” day out. Both she and I loved how simple the dress was. The flirty mint skirt added a nice touch of soft summer colour to this skater style dress and the bodice featured a feminine lace detail. Miss 11 wore it with the heart necklace she got from Forever 21, and the Steve Madden silver sandals she bought in America from Nordstrom Rack in San Francisco. Just quietly, I’m glad we wear the same size shoes because now I can borrow those sandals off her! Mwahahahaha….

Yes, I did Miss 11’s makeup that night, allowing her to wear a little because I’d rather I do that than having her experiment and end up looking like a clown if I had said no. I also did her hair, curling it with the VS Sassoon Curl Secret and then braiding her fringe to the side. My little girl has certainly grown up. And yes, I got a little teary as I was applying her makeup. It was the ultimate mother-daughter moment for me.
More on Miss 11’s graduation night tomorrow, when I share my Friday’s Favourites list.
